Hi Guys...happy 2007 to all of you and keep on making people dance (latin dance that is) Well looey...I see it like this.... I have or tried to adjust to the crowd that is present at whatever event going on and after doing it for a while u get to know who the salsa consumers are and the ones that do a little and the ones that are just there to listen or dance someting else. Now as for how a dj plays his music and how he chooses his set, is up to each dj and how he/she reads the dance floor, what i dont get sometimes tho and I think i mentioned it to u last nite at the club....i started playing salsa (slow salsa) cause the newbies are usually the ones that start the dance so u dont wanna scared them away so u play simple slow salsa...salseros start joining in i build up from there. I also see who is not dancing and make my choices as to what to play next and if I see a reaction (good or bad) i make my choice if I play 1 or 3 songs of the same style in a row. I tend to play a hell of alot more salsa than anything else tho. I mix my music except for the salsa dura classic set which I believe should be let played till it ends. "People that don't dance salsa , are bored when you play 8 salsas in a row. People that dance only salsa are bored when you play 8 songs non salsa in a row."
Next time Im going to time my sets. * non salsa songs does not mean 8 * 4 minutes = 32 min I dont think so.
One thing I have noticed is that on my first set of salsa i may have a whole lot of the "regular salseros" and by the time im playing my second or third salsa set that number has dropped quite a bit...so of course im not gonna play anymore than 2 or 3 at one time. Now besides salsa there are other stuff that get to be played...u might think that after a poor set of salsa....u group say cumbia n reggaeton and make that a 5 song mix is way too long. but yet if i do there are tons of people dancing then i change to salsa and again poor response (this is not the case all the time)...why is this? and they complaint about it.....uhmmm. For instance when we opened the club I would go about 85 to 90 percent salsa...remember? I dont know what it would be now but i play other stuff that i would not play before or at least not as much...and dont take me wrong I LOVE SALSA but is not me Im playing for. Now we have created Saturdays to make it whatever does not get overplayed on Friday like cumbia and vallenato and other stuff that another group of people might enjoy instead of salsa all nite. Im still hopefull to make Friday an all salsa nite...but I do have my doubts based on the crowd which is tough enuff for business as is since (and u know this)the kids that come to salsa dont spend money...so if it is not good for the club well............ With Saturdays opening up Im sure Ill be taking people that might come on Friday and make Saturday their nite...will salsa survive? I hope it does. I have already thought about askin Gary and Nicho to guest dj whenever they are available for salsa...but wont know for sure how it will go till the new year when we split up the nite. Anyhow...good observations and like Gary said people should approach us and let us know what they want. Cheers guys. Gerardo PS Looey just call me KRUZ not Giraldo :-) I dont have a moustache.
