gury on dj techniques   by DJ Gury Gury

Hello Looey, et al....
Let me preface this statment with this.......Everynight I go up the stairs at the E-Bar I have in my mind 100% salsa from New York or Puerto Rico in the 7o's style.  That is what I love, anything you hear other than that is me feeling what the gente what or requests.  Some people love this others don't.....
I always hear those comments as well.  People tell me I play too much Salsa, then 5 minutes later it is too much reaggaeton, etc...
I have come to except that you can't keep everyone happy all the time.
My suggestion for people is to approach the DJ and ask for what they want and be specific.  By this I mean people will come and ask for a merengue, well that is a huge genre with 1000's of artists.  Be more specfic.  I want to hear Oro Solido or even something like Tipica, etc....  It would help, because nothing is more frustrating than someone asking you for merengue you play a song and they are sitting down and not dancing..
As far as selection and grouping the musics together.  It has to do with flow and I do believe that most of the time everyone on this list is dead on with what they play.  They know there shit.  Certain muisc flow together I believe Reaggeton, Merengue and Cumbia flow very well.  While Bachatta in my mind is a stand alone I would prefer to play a Bolero, but people just wouldn't get it.  You have to play to the people that are dancing or in the club Everyone not just a few vocal people.
Por ejemplo if I have many young University kids they want reggaeton more that night and I try and get them into some slower salsa's.  If I see the dancers are newer I play more merengue and pop salsa, etc.
Some might play more Salsa's in a row , me, and some may not.   I don't think the soloution to to have 4 than 2 than 4 than 2 format.  It leaves the evening with the same flow night in night out.  Each guy here plays for the most part different styles of salsa and musics.  Let's allow us to have our different niche's.
I also do not believe that 8 salsa's in a row is a bad thing there are different styles, eras and even genres under what we call "Salsa".
I would be interested in what everyone has to say on this .  Please let me know
GG
